Default Why Twilight Sucks

From my MySpace - a bulletin I posted, and thought I'd spread the word around

Upon hearing of the new Twilight movie coming out relatively soon, I felt the need to post this. Now, don't accuse me of not reading the series. I've read a bit of the first book, some time ago, and absolutely hated it. The second reason I'm posting this. Feel free to message me about this if you want, but don't expect me to read if you go about insulting me (If you're a Twilight fan)

I do not like Twilight, and it is my belief that no one else should, either. It promotes things that are morally incorrect in our society. To quote the Anti-Twilight Fanclub ( I do not claim any part of this as my own)...

* Purple prose. (Wiki it)
* Mary-Sue (AKA perfect) main character.
* Misuse of words (for example, the infamous misuse of the word "chagrin").
* The lame, corny dialogue that would make even George Lucas cringe. And he wrote Attack of the Clones, people.
* The boring, predictable plot.
* The inherent anti-feminist messages conveyed by Bella's attitude.
* The suggestion that child grooming and pedophilia are okay if it's the offspring of the woman you loved but was stolen from you by some shampire queer.
* Edward, the single most abusive boyfriend in the history of literature.
* Meyer's perversion of the proper vampire myth, thus inspiring me to create a new word for his kind: the Shampire. This is done in a few ways:
o Making Edward and his kind "sparkle" in the sunlight instead of dying.
o Edward considering himself a "vegetarian" vampire, only consuming the blood of smaller, non-sentient animals.
o Bella's desire to become one. Really, no novel character should want to become the living dead.
* The fact that despite Meyer's insistence that Bella is average looking, not too bright, and really kind of boring, every guy in her new school is completely crazy about her on her first day.
* The glaringly obvious fact that Bella is based on Meyer herself. Meyer seems to have a rather high opinion of herself, no?

...that would seem bad enough, right? Wrong. That's the tip of the iceberg. There are so many things wrong, that even the actors who played Bella and Edward don't even want to be in the upcoming movies, and from what I hear, blatantly make fun of Stephenie Meyer for her flawed series.

The next link is a giant low-down of many things that were wrong/didn't make sense in the story. Copy and paste the link, I don't know the codes

http://twilightsucks.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=twilight&action=display&thread=638

And it's accurate, straight from someone who has (To my memory - I could be mistaken) read every single one of the available books in this series.

But that's not all.

Encyclopedia Dramatica's article on Twilight (There may be some naughty advertisements on the side panel-thing, but don't mind them):
http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/Twilight

All of that should tell you why the series is no good.

And now...onto the die-hard fans, the "Twitards" (Or "Twihards").

With the behavior of a piranha, Twitards are some of the most vicious fans I've ever heard of. Attempted murder for simply saying "No, Twilight's not my thing"? Yeah, they went there.

Prepare for more links!

Encyclopedia Dramatica's article on Twitards:
http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/Twitard

And the "Twilight Sucks" fanclub's "Twihard Attack Dictionary":
http://twilightsucks.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=fangirls&action=display&thread=517 5&page=1

And this is the end. I fear the future, if this is what humanity is being reduced to (As if without Twilight we weren't bad enough).

It doesn't matter how much you hate it, the truth of the matter is that pretty much every female in the world has either read it, or plans on reading it. The rest, either haven't heard about it yet, or are in the minority of those that don't like it. And with all these people reading it, the anti twilight clubs out there can bitch all they want about it...but the fact remains. The author, Stephanie Meyer I think her name is, is laughing all the way to the bank. She's filthy rich. And if all these people are reading it, she must be doing something right. You probably just didn't like it because you aren't into that type of story.

Everything in that list you quoted is opinion, including lame plot, boring dialogue, etc. If you ask my fiance, she would say that list is dead wrong and give you another that said stuff like "thrilling storyline, well thought out characters and events, etc." She loved the books and finished them in like 2 weeks. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's not good. I think that the author did a good job making the "vampire" something different. They sparkle in the sunlight is something new on the vampire lore. But the fact that Edward eats small animals is not new. Anne Rice actually did stuff like this, as well as many other vampire stories throughout history (Angel from Buffy stopped killing humans and drank pigs blood, Louie from Interview with the Vampire initially killed rats and drank from them, etc.) She took a popular myth in human culture and made it her own in a novel, which in and of itself, is a novel idea.

Sorry, it just urks me when people don't like something and they go on a rampage about how it's wrong. You say that Twilight fans are horrible fans (or rather you quoted someone saying it) but you and the person who wrote it are doing the same thing. You're bashing them, just like you said they bash others. So, this concludes my rant. Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean it's not good or enjoyable to others.

...despite the fact I posted a link to a site that actually had a long list on why the series is bad/flawed. I'm not just spouting shit out on immediate reaction.

Also take note - I only said that I believe no one should like, but did I come out and say it as if it were a law? No. I'm posting this here to show why the we believe that the series is no good, and if you don't like that I did so, tough shit. I put up with it every damn day, so I think that people who are going to defend it can put up with an occasional burst like this one, which I posted not because I'm "not into that type of story," but because I found it to be poorly written, and fan-girls keep squawking about Edward this and Bella that. So basically, I'm not just doing this because I simply don't like the series - I'm providing reasons on why I don't like and that I'm not just jumping on a bandwagon. It irks me that you just automatically assume I'm just some random hater with no base.

Also, I'm verbally (Or textually, W/E) bashing them, not even running rampant with this, not bashing people with a baseball bat or a fucking chair, both of which Twilight fans did.

But +2 for being the first person to give me an actual response on it. I appreciate that, at least.

I didn't mean to come off rash when I made the reply. I apologize for that. I was only playing Devil's Advocate. I think the books are kinda dumb for the attention that they receive, but regardless, they are a phenomenon. It doesn't matter how poorly written they are, they make money, and in today's world, if something makes money, it's going to be bled dry. I think the books are fine and everything and if people read them, good. My fiance teaches at a title 1 school (title 1 is a "title" given to a school with a lot of kids who are below grade level, under privileged, etc.) and for the first time ever, she is hearing kids talking about how they read the book. That's amazing. These kids are more likely to drop out of school due to an early pregnancy than read, yet they are reading this book. For that simple fact, I applaud the book and think it is doing more good for society that many other books that have come before it. Something in the book touched these kids so much that they actually finished it, and understood it, something that most authors can't even begin to do.

The movie on the other hand, is trash. But, it made money, so expect to see more of it. If it makes money, as I said, they'll milk it dry. But the books, I hope she keeps putting them out. If kids who hate reading continue to pick up the book, it doesn't matter how bad people think it is, it's doing something that others have been trying to do for years.

Well, if these books are making Meyer so much money, I'd think she can endure my little argument against her. I've nothing against the people that read these books, only the people that attack others for it (The Twitards).

PS: That happens with all sorts of books. Which ones I can't say, because all of my friends can read (One even learned to read through Legend of Zelda, I believe), but your point is taken.
