It's a random hardware error. Could be anything...

E74 is one of the worst errors you can get other than RRoD

Ive never gotten that but ive gotten the red rings of death.

If something failes in the xbox without us causing it, it should be repaired for free! Im talking about the E74 error.

You are 100% right about that! It's one thing if it happens 3 or 4 years later... God knows what happened to it in that period of time (if it was dropped, ect.), but most of these errors happen within the first year or sooner! That is just BS and Microsoft just rushed the 360 to get it out before the PS3 and they wont own up to their mistakes

Yeah I just got my xbox back from the E74 Error. That happened about 2 months ago, but I had the RRoD 2 months after opening the box (bought it about a year ago). Both times it took me 3 days to get them to send me a box because they kept going well try this now okay then try this. Really just send me a box.

Wow, I'm distraught. I've owned an Xbox since the month it was released. I'm on my second one now. I take a day off work, buy two games...E 74 error when I wake up in the morning. I have no fucking idea how this could have happened either. Last night I was online until around midnight playing, I turned off the console as I always do, went to bed. Woke up this morning, turned it on, E74. I'm fuming pissed right now. I take amazing care of my consoles, they have open space, never overheat, etc. So, this issue, isn't the RRoD, it's because of a faulty hardware issue. I haven't even had the machine a full year yet. So, now I have Left 4 Dead 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 and only my first console to play them.

The first console was replaced because it has trouble recognizing discs. I'm afraid to open the game and then that console die on me like it has a thousand times before. I think I'm just going to suck it up, and go pick up Assassin's Creed for the PS3. I'll try to sell the 360 version on ebay.

Oh Microsoft, I'm so pissed at you right now. You're making me wonder why I stood by you all these years. The PS3 is looking more and more like a main system these days.

Sorry to hear the bad news, VA1N. Just reading that makes me depressed. I think more and more people will be jumping on the PS3 bandwagon especially now that the price is only $299.

You mentioned that you've had the new 360 for less than a year. Is it under warranty?
