Microsoft used "X-Clamps" underneath the Xbox 360 motherboard to hold the CPU and GPU heatsinks in place. The X-Clamp fix is basically you taking out those "X-Clamps" from underneath the motherboard and replacing them with straight bolts. Microsoft's X-Clamp design is bad because it applies pressure on other parts of the motherboard around the CPU and GPU and solder points at those locations over time become lose and that is one reason why people get RROD.

Here is a picture of Microsoft's "X-Clamps" that are on the bottom of the motherboard. They are holding the heatsinks in place over the GPU and CPU which are on the other side of the motherboard:

RROD - red ring of death - gotchya. Pretty ironic how the clamps are in an x fashion. Wonder if that had anything to do with the xbox name. By the way thanks for telling me about this site -

remove the heat sinks, clean up the chips, add the silver thermal compound, refit heat sinks and x clamps.
no parts required x clamps work fine, the old heat transfer compound is the cause of the problem.
may need to change pal settings if picture is black and white.
