Government to have power to 'shut down' the internet?

Is the United States government just finding another way to blame threats of terrorism on reasons why they are taking more control over us? What do you think?

I didn't watch the video, but my reply is a response to the "government's taking more control over us" in general.

I'm going to number my points to avoid making this lengthy

1. If the government wants to listen to my phone calls, check what websites I visit, track where I spend my money, and follow me on vacation, THATS FINE BY ME! I am not a criminal nor am I involved in criminal acts or anything that is linked to criminal activity. If by letting them do all of the above saves ONE AMERICAN LIFE I feel like I helped! For People that disagree I have one thing to say, "Ignorance is bliss".

2. Terrorism is REAL. A lot of people think because we don't "see it" (besides 9/11) it doesn't exist or the threat isn't that bad. Look @ Israel for a good example of what happens when your not proactive against the fight against terrorism, (Up until they invaded the Gaza strip recently). People bitch and moan about about the government doing all this shit, BUT guess why we haven't had any attacks since 9/11?!!!

I didn't watch the video either but the government is forcing this control. Last I check, this was a free and democratic country. They're trying to control more of us everyday. Soon they'll determine when our lights go out.

All I know is people would absolutely go CRAZY if the internet got shut down... even if it was just down for a short period of time. I dont think its even possible. Too many financial systems are independent on the internet. Just think about what would happen to the stock market... even if the internet was shut down for 5 minutes... everything would go nuts. Thats all electronic.

I just dont see the purpose... "we think that some people are plotting a terror attack against us and they are communicating via internet, so we're just going to shut down the internet for a little while" - someone tell me what that accomplishes? ...the internet will just come back online eventually... so what is the point! Also, just because the internet is down means that they will have no other way to communicate and continue their plot?

My opinion... leave the internet alone and catch them while they are in the act. Shutting down the internet is not going to help minimize the amount of terror attacks.

I think that the internet should be more controlled and secured. All the bad content(porn), viruses, hacking, etc need to be stopped.

People should not have a problem with the government controlling the internet if they are not doing anything illegal. If you have nothing to hide, then you shouldn't be worried about someone watching you 24/7. As for shutting it down, well, I doubt the government would do that, since there is no logical reason.

That is what people said about gay rights, and African American rights; That if we let them slide, then soon murderers and rapists would get their rights. Don't be so radically extreme.
