Something Big or New From Sony on the Way?

There has been a lot of news recently about Sony and this mysterious PS3 Slim. The German Amazon.com site recently had a listing for it on it's website not too long ago and even included a picture of the device, which was a lot like the images that have been floating around the internet as of late. Then there was that shaky cam image of some dude trying to explain the PS3 Slim in a store in India. Now, we have reports out of Taiwan that Sony has recently "placed significant orders for key Sony PS3 components." The source, Taiwan's DigiTimes, reports that these orders are way above the normal quantities that get them by day to day.

So what you say? Sony needs parts to build the PS3, so they are buying them. Well, the PS3 isn't the highest in demand product on the market at the moment, so why would they need all this new stuff to make something that really isn't selling. The way I see it, they are building something new. Either we are going to see the PS3 Slim soon (most likely) or a new Sony Playstation product altogether (not likely). Hopefully, with the release of the PS3 Slim, those who have been turned off by the PS3's high price can finally be able to get in on the action. We'll just have to wait and see what comes of this story in the coming weeks.

It's the PS3 Slim in my opinion. Price cut also coming this Fall for PS3 (also my opinion).

Yeah, it's definitely the Slim. I don't know if they are going to make a price cut on the PS3 though. I think the PS3 Slim is their answer to everyone demanding a price cut. Sony has said multiple times that if they lower the price, they'd lose money. So, how do you get around that? Make a new system that plays the same games, maybe less bells and whistles, but also costs less to make and therefore has lower price.

So the PS3 Slim is going to be cheaper than the PS3?

I would think so. They haven't really announced it yet, so no price rumors as of yet, but it makes sense. People keep complaining about the PS3's price and Sony says if they decrease the price, they lose money. So, if they make the PS3 with cheaper parts, they can have a 200 - 300 dollar system...it just won't be the equal of the PS3.

I think that would be a very smart move. Kind of like the Arcade vs The Elite with the 360. People will buy the smaller PS3 even if it doesn't have the big hard drive. Hell, the PS3 can be modded to have your own hard drive in it. I've seen people with 500 gig hard drives for their PS3. That's just overkill.

One thing that they should do is bring back PS2 backwards compatibility. If they did that, they would sell a hell of a lot more systems. When I bought my system, I was trying so hard to get the Metal Gear solid one so I could play PS2 games but they didn't have any left. I was so pissed.

Okay yeah, that makes sense. For some reason I was thinking the PS3 Slim would be more expensive than the PS3, and we would see a price cut on the PS3 system. Not sure what made me think that! Looking at it your way makes more sense though for sure.
